We’re passionate about what we sell
When a delivery arrives, we get excited,
even though we know what’s inside.
We unwrap everything with care, stroke it, price it
and spend far too long finding the right place for it.
If we wouldn't display the products in our own homes,
or offer them to our friends as gifts,
then you won't see them in the store.
For us, it’s all about the detail.
I’m Jo and I started this business because I needed a better work life balance, I now work more hours than ever, but I love it (apart from completing the VAT return and refilling the pricing gun, I like to delegate those tasks). You’ll find me in the shop most days, even if I’m off, I tend to be in, I need to address that.
I love quirky things and have a dry sense of humour, I think our shop reflects that. I have a trio of Labradors called Charlea, Lottie & Dolly and a husband called Paul, I didn’t mean to list them in that order but Paul will understand. We like to go to the beach when we get time off, which isn’t often, but very precious. We eat fish and chips out of the wrapper, it always tastes better by the sea and the doggies always get a couple of chips. I love holidays but I'm fussy where I stay. I’ve been known to change a booking because I didn’t like the carpet. Wi-Fi is essential, I don’t necessarily use it (who am I kidding!) the feeling of not being contactable doesn’t sit well.
I love to cook and my favourite snack is a fish finger sandwich with Heinz tomato sauce and a cup of tea. I drink far too much tea and prefer it when my husband makes it, he’s the expert and always makes a perfect one when I get home. The girls in the shop make reasonable tea, but it's usually cold by the time I get to drink it.
I wear a lot of black, I wear a lot of grey too, I try not to but I can’t help myself, I’m a creature of habit. I also wear a lot of stars, I have a slight addiction to stars, if ever you want to sell me something, make it in grey and pop a star on the front!
My favourite season is Autumn, I love the colours on the trees and I’m sure Autumn has its own distinct smell. For me, it’s the season where so much changes in such a short space of time, it doesn’t hang around, it just gets on with it – I like that. I don’t like the daddy-long-legs though, I have to make sure the house is in lockdown when those pesky things are around.
So that's me and that's what I enjoy in life.

By trade, Clare is an independent artist and founder of Original Art by Clare. You’ll generally see Clare in the shop on Mondays and Tuesdays, always smiling and on the look out for deliveries. Clare loves getting stuck into these, so we let her! Another quality is arranging the cards, others mess it up, but not Clare, she’s the only one I allow to touch them! In her free time Clare will be found visiting car shows, travelling around Cornwall in her vintage camper van or around Ampthill in her original Mini, drinking copious amounts of tea (milk three sugars), painting & crafting and is mum to a cute bunny called Bungee.
Lydia looks after all our admin for us, without her, we would be lost! She ensures our suppliers are paid on time, organises our rotas, sorts out the payroll, gets through my endless lists of tasks and generally helps the business flow. Oh and she breaks things, if something breaks it usually happens right next to Lydia. She can be bossy at times, but I like that, she keeps us all in check! In her spare time, apart from entertaining her gorgeous kiddies, Lydia’s an extraordinary baker and a bit of a foodie, sadly she rarely comes in with cake left overs, she knows how to tease us. She likes to keep busy, so there’s not much free time in her schedule, but when there is, she’ll be out partying like an 18-year-old.
Kirsty is one of those all rounders who can turn her hand to pretty much anything, especially DIY. Kirsty does all our interior painting and without a dust sheet, she’s that precise! With a great eye for detail, Kirsty has played a huge part in the interior design for No.14, coming up with some great ideas. Kirsty works on Mondays and Tuesdays, along with Clare, and during any quiet time, she adds all our new stock onto the till and generally lets us know where we keep going wrong. I have a bit of a love / hate relationship with our till, whereas Kirsty loves it, I’m sure she logged in remotely on her wedding day. Kirsty’s favourite range in the shop in Rader, she lets out a little squeal whenever a new delivery arrives and even comes in on her day off to help unpack.
When Larissa responded to our vacancy, her husband went into panic, Larissa is a natural born shopper, we should consider paying her in vouchers. Larissa tends to work on Thursday and Fridays, she’s obsessed with list making and is at her happiest when she completes her list, providing it doesn’t include inflating balloons. Larissa’s as fond of balloons as I am of clowns. When not at the shop, you’ll find Larissa working at her other job as a nail technician, or walking her 2 beautiful pups, Betty and Alfie. Another one who loves to travel, Larissa has exquisite holiday taste and visits places the rest of us can only dream about, until we win the lottery.
